Unsui @ Vivid Sydney

Unsui: /cloud, water/ –  “to drift like clouds and flow like water”

I am inspired by the creativity, innovative thinking and collaborative spirit within JHA. These sensibilities require cultivation, which is why I jumped at the opportunity that Vivid Sydney offered – to play in a completely creative space and have some fun outside of building services. JHA’s investment in a project like this reflects a changing, dynamic culture that celebrates innovation and bold ideas.

The Unsui Team?

A collaboration of JHA disciplines came together to produce this unique meditative, acoustic and visual experience.

Sus – The Dreamer:

I have always been captivated by clouds.
Clouds have no responsibility; born wanderers, die wanderers.

As a child I was captivated by these gorgeous, white, translucent, innocent formations in the sky. My imagination would run wild creating images and stories in their shapes.

When I started travelling in planes I was even further intrigued, forever in awe of the gigantic formations visible from the tiny aeroplane window. Even more so when caught up in the excitement of turbulence.

Just like humans, the mood of a cloud can change in an instant. Light plays an important role in reflecting their mood as they interact with the sun, painting the sky with vivid and intense colours. Absorbing every vapour as they move through their journey, they cry out in magical rolling thunderstorms, depleting their energy and eventually themselves. I find clouds extremely calming to observe. This was the conceptual starting point for our installation.

Aadi – The Spiritualist:

A few years back I attended a laser and fire show in the open air of a temple in India, and it just so happened that it started lightly drizzling as the show began.

The effect was that the light seemed to be everywhere and all around me. Added to that the soundscape in the background, it was a truly spiritual experience. I experienced at the same time a sense of peace and a sense of awe, something which I have always wanted to recreate. From our very first design meeting, there was an uncanny synergy between my spiritual experience and Susanne’s cloud idea, and we immediately felt this was something worth pursuing.

I contributed the Zen Buddhist term ‘Unsui’ as I felt that it perfectly captured our intent for a cloud like, meditative experience.

Jan – The Technician:

Without music and sound, life would be dull and boring. I am a part-time musician, and ever since I was a child music has always fascinated me. I love the concept of utilising different instruments and effects to create sounds which can then in turn produce music. As technology continues to change there is a lot to consider and learn. It is important to appreciate the affect that technology has on our ability to realise ideas. This applies to music and also light.

The dynamics of lighting control and the soundscape we have created will transcend the viewer into the world we have created, an experience of something magical they won’t forget.

Kish – The Realist:

While most of the design team are concerned with the “why”, my role within the team is to rationalise and develop the “how”; to ground our conceptual ideas in reality by relying on my skills and experience within the electrical, lighting, control and audio visual realms. The result is to pull all of these technologies together into a physical representation of the initial design concept.

Throughout the process, certain buildability issues need to be overcome in order for the installation to work, and that’s where I come in. In attaining a holistic view of the installation early on, it allows me to identify and target any foreseeable concerns we might have with the build; I see it as though I’m building with Lego without any instructions.
