The Trinity Grammar School Environmental & Field Studies Centre for junior and senior students is located on 50 hectares of stunning landscape in Woollamia, NSW. The new facility, including accommodation and classrooms, was created to provide an offsite teaching environment with a focus on environmental studies, ecology and natural science.
Inspired by the surrounding natural landscape, the facility was designed with a strong sustainability focus, consisting of full timber structured cabin-style accommodation buildings (sleeping up to 88 students and 10 staff), teaching and multipurpose rooms, commercial kitchen, servery, cool room and staff/administration areas.
The building was designed to integrate seamlessly into the landscaspe and features a palette of natural materials, such as wood, rock and glass, so careful selection and coordination of fixtures and equipment was important. The delivered result is a highly functional building of stunning proportion and considered detailing.
One of the project challenges involved delivering the construction across two stages. This was made possible by a close working relationship with the excellent delivery team, Stephen Edwards (Builder), Building Studio (Architect) and Midson Group (Project Manager).
Building Studio worked tirelessly to ensure every building element responded respectfully to the environmental context and as such, we took care to apply light in a similarly restrained way, containing light within the building fabric to ensure the stars were still visible.
Special thanks go to Stephen Edwards Constructions who gave us permission to use their stunning photographs.
