Smart Skyscraper Summit 2018
Dean James was amongst the 5 experts on the discussion panel at the Australian Smart Skyscrapers Summit 2018 held over 2 days at Doltone House Darling Island, Sydney.
Dean sat alongside Catherine Skinner – Principal, BVN, Andrew Phelan –RIDLEY, M. Hank Haeusler – Associate Professor, School of Architecture and Design, UNSW Sydney and Tyrone Padayachee – Digital Design Manager, Richard Crookes Construction to discuss ‘The Future of the High-Rise” including the latest in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and 5D and 6D processes and their impacts on the design, construction and beyond of Sydney’s future high-rise projects.

Three main questions were posed to the panel for discussion:
1. Is ‘Form Follows Function’ an outdated credo? Can 3D printing systems shift modern standards of architecture and engineering?
2. Building skyscrapers within 4D virtual reality environments: exploring the integrated 4D platform allowing designers to plan their work within an immersive space reflecting the real-life environment of the proposed project.
3. Exploring the latest in Building Information Modelling (BIM), and unpacking the increased need to adopt 5D and 6D BIM processes.
A varied exchange of ideas and thoughts was experienced throughout the duration of the 2-day conference, with much discussion on topics surrounding the “What, how, when & why” emerging digital engineering technology alongside design innovations will impact the ever expanding building industry, specifically its skyscrapers.
