St Paul’s Student Accommodation
ST PAUL’S
STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
St Paul’s College is a residential academic community located in the heart of the University of Sydney, and is one of Australia’s oldest universities, enrolling its first students in 1857. The college has undergone a major expansion and refurbishment over the past few years.
JHA was engaged as the multidisciplinary consultant for this new 558 bed multi-building development, and provided engineering expertise for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, high voltage, vertical transport, audio visual and ESD services.
ARCHITECTURALLY DESIGNED UNITS
Designed by Cox Architecture and was managed by Citta Property Group, this project was delivered in a staged manner. The first stage involved the Ivan Head building and consisted of premium studio apartments, one, two and three-bed units, ensuite bathrooms, a library and study centre, tutorial rooms and a gymnasium.
The second stage was the Graduate House building which will offer accommodation, dining area, communal student library, study centre and a rooftop terrace and garden. During term time, the facilities are provided for students but out of term, the accommodation can be leased out for private lets.
MODULAR BATHROOM PODS
For economy and speed of installation, the modular ensuite bathroom pods were manufactured offsite, with showers, taps, toilets and pipework already fitted. The prefabricated units were then delivered to site, craned into position and services were connected by certified installers.
This meant that our engineering design needed to be faultless, and the connections had to be absolutely accurate. JHA’s hydraulic team provided detailed design for seamless installation of services for the bathroom pods.
STAGES AND PHASES
Future proofing of the site was necessary for the addition of a possible third building, with the infrastructure of the site needing to cater for all buildings, including connection to the Old Quad existing building.
During all construction phases, the college and oval remained operational, so one of the main challenges was to reduce the disruption to the campus as much as possible. JHA worked closely with the utilities and the project manager for a smooth transition.
