Three Capes Track Lodges

JHA provided multidiscipline engineering services design for this $10M, 2 remote walking lodges on the 3 Capes Track in South Eastern Tasmania. Accessible only by a 3-day wilderness hike, these sites were required to be entirely off-grid with all provisions flown in biannually by helicopter. The 2 sites have capacity for 16 and 32 guests. Power was provided by a solar PV array of 12 & 20kW peak capacity, with zinc bromide flow batteries used for energy storage with 50 & 800kWh storage capacity. Water is sourced entirely from rainwater harvesting with storage in excess of 100kL at each site. Heating for domestic hot water and space heating is provided by electric heat pumps which produce and store hot water only when excess solar electricity is available, with high efficiency instantaneous condensing LPG boilers providing back up heat when required.

Amora Hotel Jamison Sydney

JHA partnered with Luchetti Krelle (one of Sydney’s premier hospitality design groups) to breathe new life into this five star hotel. The upgrade included most front-of-house areas, conference facilities, ballrooms, restaurant, bar, all day dining and the reception lobby. This project raised its fair share of challenges, one of which being the budget-related decision to maintain an existing layer of architectural lighting within most of the newly refurbished spaces. Older lighting technologies were interweaved with the new design elements by carefully balancing colour temperature and brightness.

UNSW Roundhouse

Redevelopment of the University’s iconic Roundhouse building. Teamed with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects, JHA’s project team was tasked with modernising the building, creating a more flexible and energy-efficient venue, while also upgrading its acoustic properties. The newly refurbished Roundhouse will continue to serve as a venue of choice for concerts, music gigs, conferences, events, seminars and box office events. The building also provides a merchandise and food area, permanent bar and beer garden with a secondary private bar area. JHA’s specialist lighting team worked closely with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects to conceal lighting fixtures wherever possible, allowing the eye to wander over radial geometry with as few interruptions as possible. Careful design of the house lighting on the mezzanine level was critical, as nothing was allowed to distract from the world-class audio visual system in the performance space below. UNSW

Spicers Guesthouse

Spicers Guesthouse is a luxury retreat situated amidst the wineries of the Hunter Valley, with exceptional views of the rolling mountain ranges. JHA’s specialist lighting team partnered with Spicers, Cottee Parker and Turner & Townsend Thinc to deliver illuminated spaces which are sensitive to the surrounds, and which resonate with an elegance synonymous with the Spicers brand. An important aspect of the design strategy was our focus on the ‘arrival experience’ – ensuring that guests are welcomed from the property boundary at the beginning of the driveway, through the carpark and exterior grounds and into the warmth of the interiors, via soft lighting integrated within the landscape.  The view of the stars in the Hunter region is phenomenal, so controlling unwanted light spill was an integral principle of the lighting strategy. Inside, the lighting approach evokes a warm and relaxed ambiance to all guest areas; from the restaurant, lounge and bar, the stunning architectural proportions of the wine cellar to the multipurpose function spaces and guestrooms.
